Before 4 April 2002, if you were an Australian citizen and applied to become a citizen of another country, you automatically lost your Australian citizenship.
Alternatively, you may have renounced your Australian citizenship to be able to become a citizen of another country or to avoid significant hardship.
The above situations may also have affected your children who may also have lost their citizenship.
If you lost or renounced your Australian citizenship and are of good character – you can apply for a resumption of your Australian citizenship by following 5 simple steps. If your children were under 16 years at the time you lost your citizenship and are still under 16 years of age they can be included in your application for resumption of Australian citizenship. If they are aged over 16 years they must apply in their own right.
