Since 1973 New Zealand citizens have been allowed to live and work in Australia without restriction. If you are a New Zealand citizen who arrived in Australia before 26 February 2001, you may be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship.
On 1 September 1994 changes where implemented to automatically grant a Special Category visa to all New Zealand citizens entering Australia. At the time of presenting their passports for immigration clearance they are considered to have applied for a visa and subject to health and character requirements, will automatically receive an SCV visa electronically.
If you arrived in Australia on or after 27 February 2001 and hold an SCV visa you also may be eligible for Australian citizenship. To find out whether you are able to obtain Australian citizenship, please make an appointment with our office.
